ANZIO Close Combat Scenario Set
rev. July 11, 1997
By Michael Zarudzki (zarudzki@erols.com)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Italian Campaign ran from autum of 1943 to the spring of 1944.
The allies desired Rome. Unfortunatley the terrain of Italy proved a formidable
defense and without superiour numbers of troops and flanking maneuvers the only
way the allies could get to Rome would be by a series of naval landings.
The beaches near Anzio, thirty-five miles south of Rome, were suitable for
amphibious landings, and the open terrain of the low, relatively level coastal
plain around Anzio was favorable for maneuver. Good roads led to the Alban Hills,
some twenty miles inland. The Alban high ground, fifteen miles southeast of
the center of Rome dominates the southern approaches to the city. The hill
complex was the last barrier the Germans could use to bar an Allied entry into
Rome.
The scenario set picks up with both sides having been well supplied, with the
Germans starting to launch their counter-attack to push the allies back into
the sea.
This scenario set was made possible with the Xprograms from Peter Fisla. The
Xprograms can be found at his web site along with other important information
on customizing close combat.
